COMMON EYE CONDITIONS

Treating astigmatism, cataracts and eye conditions in Glasgow

At Munro Optometrists, our Glasgow professionals specialise in diagnosing and treating a number of common eye conditions, including astigmatism and cataracts. Eye health is something that everyone needs to be wary of, regardless of age. Our Glasgow optometrists constantly emphasise the importance of regular eye tests in preventing and treating a number of common eye conditions.

Astigmatism

Often detected in general eyesight examinations, most people have a degree of astigmatism; a condition where the optical power of the eye varies according to light passing through it. Astigmatism can produce a degree of blurred vision. Due to the shape of the cornea, its curvature bends light depending on direction. Considered to be a focusing error, astigmatism is often aided by prescription lenses.

Myopia/Short sightedness

Myopia, commonly known as short sightedness, is a condition resulting in blurred vision when focusing on distant objects. While there is currently no cure for myopia, contact lenses, glasses and refractive surgery aid in providing better long-distance vision.

Hyperopia/Long sightedness

Hyperopia, also known as long sightedness, causes distant objects to be seen clearer than objects up close. Hyperopia is experienced differently by each person and varies in severity. Lenses, glasses and surgery can all be effective in reducing the effects of hyperopia.

Cataracts

Cataracts affect the lens of the eye and often result in vision deterioration. Coming in several forms and appearances, cataracts can lead to short sightedness and a number of vision impairments. Our professionals offer straightforward and fast treatment solutions and can also refer you to local hospitals for evaluations.

Flashers and floaters

Do you ever notice floaters or flashers in your vision? Often experienced after looking at the sky or bright lights, floaters and flashers are generally benign and nothing to worry about. But it’s a good idea to get your eyes checked out if you experience symptoms often. Our optometrists are able to rule out any serious problems and assess your eyes for tears or detachments.

Presbyopia

Our eyes have the ability to change focus depending on distance using muscles to change the shape of the lens. As we get older, the lens loses flexibility. This is called presbyopia – a natural process that comes noticeable at around 40-50 years old. Presbyopia can be eased with glasses and contact lenses to assist with clarity both at a distance and up close.
